During the Study

When participating in our lab, your child will sit in a sound treated booth with an examiner and will listen to sounds presented through a speaker or through earphones. To screen your child’s hearing, we will teach him/her to make a response to low- and high-pitch sounds. These responses will be play activities like putting a toy in a bucket or adding a block to a tower. We may use a mechanical toy when he/she responses to the sound as positive reinforcement. Your child will also receive a middle ear screening.

Throughout the study, different signals will be presented in quiet and in various background sounds. Your child will repeat words or will be asked to make decisions about the sounds they hear. You will be able to sit inside the booth with your child or watch your child through an observation window. Your child will be given breaks during testing. Upon parental approval, small prizes, light snacks, and water are often provided to children during these breaks.

Finishing Up

When your child is finished with the day’s study activities, we will be happy to answer any questions you have about the study or activities completed. Small prizes are offered at each break and your child will be paid for their time. Payment for participation ranges depending on the study completed and time it takes to complete testing.
