Emily BussEmily Buss, Ph.D.

Emily Buss is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She studied at Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania before coming to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for a postdoctoral fellowship. Dr. Buss is involved in a wide range of studies of human hearing including normative studies in both children and adults, as well as experiments on the effects of hearing loss in listeners who make use of hearing aids or cochlear implants. Kaila Liou, Au.D.

Kaila Liou is the lab manager for the Hearing Research Lab. Prior to coming to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she worked as a clinical audiologist. She earned her Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.) at East Carolina University and her B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Radford University.

Emma Fagerberg, B.S.

Emma Fagerberg is a research assistant in the Hearing Research Lab. She earned her undergraduate degrees in Biology and Pscyhology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Emma is interested in speech perception and understanding, and she plans to a graduate degree in Speech-Langauge Pathology.

Penelope Franklin

Graduate Research Assistant

Penelope Franklin is a graduate student assistant in the Hearing Research Lab. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at James Madison University and is currently a third-year Doctor of Audiology candidate at UNC-Chapel Hill. Penelope is interested in electrophysiology and early identification of hearing loss.

 

Bridget Gorman

Graduate Research Assistant

Bridget Gorman is a second-year Doctor of Audiology student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned her undergraduate degree in Communication Science and Disorders from Florida State University. Bridget is interested in electrophysiology research.

Stacey Kane, Au.D.

Stacey Kane is a Ph.D. student. Prior to coming to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she worked as a pediatric clinical audiologist. There she developed research interests which include appropriate audiologic interventions for difficult-to-test populations and Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder. Stacey earned her B.A. in Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology and her Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.) at Washington University in St. Louis.

Monica Folkerts, Ph.D.

Monica Folkerts is a post doc focusing on the spatial hearing abilities of older listeners, with and without hearing loss. She received her graduate degree in Hearing and Speech Sciences at Vanderbilt University where her focus was the effect of hearing loss on sound localization strategies. Monica received her undergraduate degree in Cognitive Science at the University of California, Irvine.

 

Olivia Zimmerman

Graduate Research Assistant

Olivia Zimmerman is a second-year Doctor of Audiology student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She attended Northwestern University for her undergraduate degree. Olivia is a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Trainee and has a particular clinical interest in cochlear implants.

 

Caroline Paroby, B.A.

Graduate Research Assistant

Caroline Paroby is a first-year Doctor of Audiology student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned a B.A. in Communication Sciences and Psychology from Case Western Reserve University. Caroline is interested in research about speech perception and the lifespan population.

 

Selena Marcum

Selena Marcum is a second-year Doctor of Audiology student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, she attended the Ohio State University for her undergraduate degree. Selena is a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND) Trainee as well.
